Police arrested 32 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Dec. 10 and Sunday; nine were involved in traffic accidents and one was under age 21.

Police have made 1,426 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 1,392 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

South Hilo officers arrested 17 motorists while Puna officers arrested six. Kona officers arrested five motorists, South Kohala officers arrested three and North Hilo officers arrested one.

There have been 1,382 major accidents this year compared with 1,339 during the same period last year.

To date, there have been 37 traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with 21 fatalities during the same period in 2011, according to police. To date, 12 of those fatalities were related to drugs, four to alcohol and 12 were a combination of both.
